![]() A great game that everybody has to try at least one.2009 Touchmaster 3 (NDS), Game Party 3 (Wii), Wheelman (X360) 2008 Mortal Kombat vs. Also i dont like the rubberbanding AI or the fact that you have to find the secrets obligatory to win the races, and the absent 4p mode only found in N64 version or the time trial mode and career mode only found in the PS1 version. Some tracks are random low quality instruments with some notes off beat.Ĭonclusion: At the end of the day, Hydro Thunder is one of the best arcade games i have ever played, but in consoles is more repetitive and could been a lot better. Music: And the soundtrack while i like it (themes like the main menu or thunder park are nostalgic and i love it), but some others are pretty off. Graphics: The graphics for 1999 are very impressive, and while dont aged well, the track design is beautiful for its time, nice water reflections and physics, and with variety of effects. So i will say that if you want graphics, the Arcade, Dreamcast and PC are the better options, while if you want content and better gameplay, i would say that N64 and PS1 are the best versions of the game. The N64 is like the PS1 version but with a 4p multiplayer, and oddly this is the only version with 4p support (if you have the expansion pak). Although the PS1 has worse graphics, but offers more content. While the PC version is exactly like the Arcade, but without multiplayer, and this is bad, possible the worst version, the DC port is like the arcade version but with multiplayer and the PS2 version exactly like the Arcade but with less tracks, this version is even worse than the PS1 version. While the time trial mode is a great inclusion! Especially if you want to found all the secrets, i dont understand why this mode isnt present in the other versions. All of this without saving the game and with one boat, so its like a more challenging version of the arcade one, although you dont unlock nothing and is in part frustrating. The career mode works exactly like the arcade mode, but you have to obtain money to race in the tracks, and if you run out of money you lose. The PS1 version gets two exclusive modes: career and time trial. You have to fight with the artificial difficult, and if you know all of the secrets, the game is very short, you can complete in half hour if you know everything. You can unlock more boats and tracks getting 3rd place or better for the medium tracks, 2rd place for the hard tracks and for the bonus ones you have to get in 1st place, and simply this is a very hard task. If you watch a guide with all of the shortcuts and boots, you can win the race every time, because like i said, it works like a puzzle game in some extend. ![]() This racing game in part works like a puzzle game. The racing itself maybe its not groundbreaking, but you can do some techniques that extends a lot more the gameplay (similar to games like Crash Team Racing): Cornering, Hydro Jump, Super Start, the hidden shortcuts, this game is all about secrets to win the race, although i dont like that the IA is programmated with rubberbanding and you have to find these secrets obligatory if you want to win the race, even in the easier tracks! So it can be frustrating. The game consists in water races with good variety of tracks and boats with different stats (although the game doesnt show up). And well, how it holds up? I play the Arcade version and the PS1, but also i read some differences between the N64, DC and PS2, so this review would be in general. Hydro Thunder was one of the games that i have the most nostalgia for it.
